Apple and Google are updating their smart home streaming devices to Thread 1.4. This new specification has been deployed on compatible Apple TVs through the tvOS 27 developer beta and on the Google TV Streamer via a recent software update.
The update was initially spotted by Matter Alpha and 9to5 Google. It lays the groundwork for these devices, which function as Thread Border Routers, to implement Thread credential sharing. This feature allows the devices to connect more easily to an existing Thread network, rather than needing to create a new one.
Thread is one of the connectivity protocols that the interoperability standard Matter relies upon. The Google TV Streamer's update to Thread 1.4 also provides a way to manually share its Thread credentials.
According to The Verge, the original plan for Thread Border Routers was for them to work seamlessly.
