This device features 37 keys, which offers an additional octave compared to its 25-key predecessor, the MiniLab MK3. The expanded key range aims to provide users with more room for complex musical arrangements, such as playing bass and lead simultaneously or utilizing more expansive chords. It also offers modern connectivity through USB-C and a full-size five-pin MIDI DIN out.
Arturia has launched the MiniLab 37, a new portable MIDI controller available for $149. This latest iteration in the MiniLab series features 37 keys, presenting an expanded playing surface compared to previous models.
The MiniLab 37 adds an additional octave over Arturia's 25-key MiniLab MK3, a design choice intended to enhance musical versatility. The larger key count allows for a broader range of performance possibilities, such as simultaneous bass and lead playing, or the use of more extensive chord voicings.
Physically, the MiniLab 37 shares many characteristics with its smaller counterpart. It includes a solid keybed, eight pads, eight endless encoders, and four faders. Connectivity options consist of a pair of touch strips, a USB-C port, and a full-size five-pin MIDI DIN out.
While the 25-key MiniLab MK3 is noted for its portability and ability to fit into a backpack, the 37-key version aims to strike a balance between compact design and expanded musical functionality. According to The Verge, the 37-key format is considered an ideal size for portable MIDI controllers, offering a more comfortable playing experience than its smaller predecessor.
