Burgess, who is Scotland-born, earned his 28th cap for Australia in this match. He recently completed a season with Swansea, where he participated in 51 all-competition games.
The Socceroos are set to play their next Group D game against co-hosts America in Seattle on Friday, June 19, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 BST.
Other Swansea players are also featuring in the tournament. Winger Eom Jisung made his World Cup debut for South Korea as a substitute in their 2-1 Group A victory over Czech Republic in Guadalajara. Additionally, midfielder Marko Stamenic is expected to feature for New Zealand in their Group G match against Iran on Tuesday, June 16, at 02:00 BST, having started in a warm-up friendly against England.
