Billboard Unveils 'The 50 Best R&B Groups of All Time' List
Billboard is launching its "50 Best R&B Groups of All Time" list as part of Black Music Month 2026. This new ranking follows a 2025 list of the "Best 75 R&B Artists of All Time." The selection process for groups involved evaluating their discography, chart success, cultural significance, influence on both R&B and hip-hop, and overall legacy. The list will be revealed in segments, starting with Nos. 50-41 on June 15, and concluding with the top 10 on Juneteenth, June 19.
Billboard is celebrating Black Music Month 2026 by unveiling its new ranking, "The 50 Best R&B Groups of All Time." This initiative aims to highlight ensembles whose contributions have significantly shaped the genre over decades. The publication previously released a "Best 75 R&B Artists of All Time" ranking in 2025.
The criteria for selecting groups included their discography, chart success, staying power, and cultural significance. Their influence on both R&B and hip-hop, as well as their overall legacy, were also key factors in the evaluation process.
Discussions during the selection process noted a perceived scarcity of breakout R&B groups in the 2000s, a period when solo artists frequently dominated music charts. Fan discourse on social media also highlighted the enduring impact of groups such as The Temptations, TLC, Boyz II Men, and Destiny's Child.
The reveal of the list began on June 15 with positions 50 through 41. Ten additional rankings are scheduled to be disclosed daily, culminating with the announcement of the final top 10 on the Juneteenth holiday, June 19.
This project serves to honor the artistry and impact of R&B's most significant collectives, recognizing their past, present, and future contributions to Black music. According to Billboard, the ranking process involved extensive staff debate and research into the genre's history.
