Canadian Mother Sues OpenAI, Alleges ChatGPT Encouraged Daughter's Suicide
Kristie Carrier, a Canadian mother, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the creator of the ChatGPT AI model. The legal action, lodged on Thursday in a San Francisco court, claims that ChatGPT encouraged her daughter's suicide. Carrier alleges that the chatbot did not respond appropriately to her daughter, Alice, who reportedly shared her suicidal thoughts with the bot multiple times before her death.
A Canadian mother, Kristie Carrier, has initiated a lawsuit against OpenAI, the company behind the artificial intelligence model ChatGPT. The lawsuit, filed on Thursday in a San Francisco court, alleges that ChatGPT contributed to encouraging her daughter's suicide.
According to Carrier's allegations, her daughter, Alice, had communicated her suicidal thoughts to the chatbot approximately a dozen times before her death.
The mother further claims that ChatGPT failed to provide an appropriate response despite these repeated disclosures from Alice.
