Director Curry Barker States Gen Z Seeks Quality Films, Tired of 'Slop'
Director Curry Barker, who identifies as part of Generation Z, recently stated that young audiences are willing to attend theaters for high-quality films. Following the box office success of his film *Obsession* and *Backrooms*, Barker observed that Gen Z is particularly drawn to original stories and well-produced cinema. He expressed that moviegoers of his generation are "hungry for good stories" and are "tired of films that feel rushed or overly produced," suggesting a clear preference for substance over what he terms "slop."

Curry Barker, director of the film *Obsession*, has articulated his belief that Generation Z will support movies in theaters if the quality of the films is high. Barker, 26, noted that the success of *Obsession* and *Backrooms* at the box office indicates a strong interest in low-budget horror from young audiences.
During an interview, Barker explained that Gen Z is willing to show up for an original film. He suggested that the driving factor is a widespread hunger for compelling stories, rather than a focus on intellectual property or originality itself. He added that he, along with many others, is "a little tired of films that feel rushed or overly produced."
Barker's upcoming projects include *Anything But Ghosts*, another original story in which he also stars alongside Cooper Tomlinson, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Aaron Paul. He is also involved in a *Texas Chainsaw Massacre* project with A24. He believes that moviegoers his age simply "want good stories with good characters, and even good filmmaking."
When asked what he wishes studios understood about Gen Z audiences, Barker offered a direct response. He stated, "We're tired of slop. We want good movies back. People are still hungry for movies that are original without some big IP, as long as the story is good."
Barker has also mentioned having a "cool idea" for a follow-up to *Obsession* but is not currently in a rush to develop it. According to IGN, *Obsession* received an 8/10 review.
