Everton Forward Iliman Ndiaye Reflects on Marseille Stint and Current Contract Status
Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye has reflected on his previous tenure at Olympique Marseille, discussing his challenging year with the Ligue 1 club. In recent interviews, Ndiaye admitted he believed the move to Marseille came too early in his career, citing a lack of traditional academy training and top-level experience. He also indicated that Marseille management did not show significant intent to retain him when Everton expressed interest. Currently, Ndiaye is reportedly involved in a contract standoff with Everton, having rejected multiple offers, with his representatives reportedly seeking a release clause below the club's valuation. He is also preparing for the upcoming World Cup with Senegal.
Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye has recently spoken to French media outlets, including France Football, reflecting on his past experiences at Olympique Marseille and his current situation with the Premier League club. These comments were later picked up by Foot Mercato and Sport Witness.
Ndiaye recalled the significant welcome he received from Marseille fans upon his arrival, stating, “On the day I signed, there was the player in me who wanted to take the next step. But also the child who was dreaming... And then, the welcome from the fans. I’m lost for words; it was so crazy. I hadn’t made a name for myself yet.”
Despite the initial excitement, Ndiaye's on-pitch performance at Marseille saw him score four goals and provide five assists across 46 matches. He acknowledged that the move occurred prematurely in his development, explaining, “At a club like that, you have to perform very quickly. I struggled; I won’t deny it... I lacked a bit of experience at the highest level. I would have liked a second season at Marseille to show my progress.” He further noted that his lack of a traditional youth academy background and only one professional season in the English second tier contributed to “gaps” in his game for a top French club.
Ndiaye also revealed that Marseille management did not oppose his departure when Everton expressed interest. He remarked, “When we discussed Everton’s interest with the club’s management, nobody wanted to keep me. At least it was clear…” He speculated that his trajectory at Marseille might have been different if he had two more Premier League seasons under his belt before joining.
Currently, Iliman Ndiaye is reportedly facing a contract dispute with Everton. Reports suggest he has declined multiple contract offers, with his representatives requesting a release clause significantly lower than the club's valuation. Clubs such as Manchester United, Manchester City, and Arsenal are reportedly monitoring the situation. Ndiaye is also slated to participate in the upcoming World Cup with Senegal.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, Ndiaye's comments offer insight into his professional journey and current considerations.
