Fable Reboot Delayed to February 2027, Developers Cite Strategic Benefits
The Fable reboot, developed by Playground Games and co-developed by Eidos Montreal, has been delayed by Microsoft to February 2027. Originally targeting a 2026 release, the decision aims to ensure the game receives adequate development attention. Playground GM Ralph Fulton noted initial disappointment among the team but highlighted the strategic advantages of the new February 23 launch, particularly avoiding direct competition with Grand Theft Auto 6, which is expected to release in November.

The highly anticipated Fable reboot, a collaborative effort between Playground Games and Eidos Montreal, has been rescheduled for release in February 2027. Microsoft, the publisher, confirmed the delay, stating the move is intended to allow the game to receive the development attention it requires.
Playground GM Ralph Fulton acknowledged that the initial decision to delay the game caused "a little bit of disappointment" within the studio. Developers had been "gunning" for a 2026 release and had become "really focused" on meeting that timeline. However, Fulton stated that the team now understands and "absolutely see the benefits" of the extended development period.
A primary strategic advantage of the new February 2027 release window is avoiding direct competition with Grand Theft Auto 6. Fulton explained that shifting away from the "really congested period towards the end of this year" and "obviously avoiding Grand Theft Auto" creates a "much less contested window." This allows Fable "the opportunity to go out and really make a moment for ourselves," ensuring the game receives "the attention this game deserves." Grand Theft Auto 6 is widely anticipated to "blot out the sun" in November, dominating the market during its expected release period.
The Fable reboot is now set to launch on February 23, 2027, with early access available on February 18 for players who pay extra. The game will also be accessible on Xbox Game Pass starting on its release day. Further details, including the casting of Hayley Atwell as the villain, were revealed at Summer Game Fest.
