Fictitious 'Le Chaton Fat' AI Model Becomes Viral Tech Meme
A fictional AI model dubbed "Le Chaton Fat" has gone viral within tech communities, originating as an elaborate internet joke. The meme gained traction after French AI startup Mistral rebranded its chatbot, Le Chat, to Vibe, sparking discussions among users. Jokes about a powerful, feline-themed successor quickly spread, leading to fabricated benchmarks and mock regulatory notices. Prominent figures in the AI industry, including Replit CEO Amjad Masad and Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch, have acknowledged the meme, which also served as a tongue-in-cheek commentary on US restrictions for other AI models.
A fictitious AI model named "Le Chaton Fat" has become a widespread viral meme across tech circles.
The elaborate running gag appears to have originated from Mistral's online community. The meme gained significant traction following Mistral's decision to rebrand its chatbot, Le Chat, as Vibe. This change sparked debate among users, with some expressing disappointment over the loss of the original product name.
Following the rebranding, Reddit users began creating fictional feline-themed successors to Le Chat. Posts on the Mistral subreddit introduced "Le Chaton Fat," described as a frontier model with exaggerated specifications, such as "30T+ params," "1000 meows per second," and "maximum chonk."
The joke quickly escalated, with social media users fabricating launch announcements, creating mock benchmark charts that depicted Le Chaton Fat outperforming models from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, and circulating satirical regulatory notices suggesting the European Union had banned the model for being "too heavy to regulate."
High-profile figures within the AI industry, including Replit CEO Amjad Masad and Wharton School professor Ethan Mollick, joined the trend. Mistral AI's CEO, Arthur Mensch, also referenced the meme, clarifying in a post, "It's actually le gros chaton."
The spread of the meme also coincided with and appeared to be fueled by US government restrictions on foreign entities using Anthropic's cybersecurity-focused models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Meme creators often portrayed Le Chaton Fat as a powerful European alternative to these restricted models. This aligns with Mistral's broader argument that Europe should not become overly dependent on American AI providers.
According to French technology news outlet Numerama, "Le Chaton Fat," which blends English and French spellings, is not a real AI model. Mistral AI did not respond to requests for comment regarding the meme. (Source: Business Insider)
