FIFA Explains VAR Graphics Glitch During Qatar-Switzerland World Cup Match
FIFA has issued a statement addressing fan concerns regarding a VAR review during a World Cup match between Qatar and Switzerland. The controversy arose after a penalty was awarded to Switzerland in the 17th minute, despite online users believing a Swiss player was in an offside position. Fans noted the absence of replays, onside graphics, or calibrated lines during the video review. FIFA attributed the lack of on-screen graphics to a technical malfunction, clarifying that the issue only affected the TV broadcast display. According to the organization, the VAR's work was not impaired, and the review followed regular protocol, with lines used by the video referee confirming no offside in the relevant situations.
A recent World Cup match between Qatar and Switzerland saw Qatar secure its first-ever point in the tournament. The game featured a contentious moment in the 17th minute when Switzerland was awarded a penalty, which was subsequently converted by Breel Embolo.
Online, particularly on 'X,' fans expressed skepticism regarding the decision. Many believed that Remo Freuler was in an offside position when Breel Embolo delivered the pass, an action that led to a foul by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada and the awarding of the penalty. Despite a video assistant referee (VAR) review, the penalty stood.
Further fueling fan concern was the absence of typical VAR visual aids during the broadcast. There were no replays, onside graphics, or calibrated lines displayed to viewers, leading many to question the accuracy of the VAR's decision.
In response to these concerns, FIFA released a statement. The organization explained that the TV graphic intended for displaying the offside position could not be shown due to a technical malfunction. FIFA clarified that this outage exclusively impacted the graphic display for the television broadcast and did not affect the integrity or operation of the VAR system itself. The review of the incident, according to FIFA, adhered to standard protocol.
FIFA further stated that the lines used by the video referee confirmed no offside by a Swiss player in either of the two relevant situations preceding the penalty. The technical issue affecting the graphic display was resolved shortly after the incident.
From Switzerland's perspective, the penalty converted by Embolo proved crucial, ultimately securing a point. A stoppage-time own goal from Muheim resulted in an equalizer, preventing a late defeat for Switzerland.
