Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Friday for sending drones into North Korea. Prosecutors argued that this action was intended to create a pretext for a "disastrous martial law declaration" planned for 2024. Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. The conviction on Friday stems from his role in sending drones into North Korea.
Prosecutors contended that the drone operations were aimed at creating a justification for a "disastrous martial law declaration" that was reportedly planned for 2024. Special prosecutors had stated in April that Yoon's actions, described as an effort to "fabricate wartime conditions" using drones, had compromised the security of the state.
This sentencing follows a separate legal action in February, where Yoon was previously given a life sentence. That earlier conviction was for leading an insurrection allegedly designed to "paralyse" South Korea.
