Former StubHub Art Director Faces Job Search Challenges, Takes Restaurant Work After Layoffs
Steven Lowe, 41, faced significant employment hurdles after being laid off from a six-figure art director role at StubHub in mid-April. This followed a period where he felt financially stable and able to manage student loan payments. After an extensive and challenging job search, Lowe temporarily took a restaurant host position in New York City to cover expenses. He eventually secured a new full-time role, which came with a notable pay cut compared to his previous position.
Steven Lowe, an art director, experienced a layoff from StubHub in mid-April, which prompted a challenging search for new employment. This occurred shortly after he had secured a six-figure role at StubHub in February, marking it as the highest-paying position of his career. Lowe, who is 41 and resides in Brooklyn, stated that this was the first time he felt financially stable enough to comfortably manage his student loan payments.
Following the layoff, Lowe spent months seeking a new role. During this period, he took a job as a restaurant host in New York City. This was not Lowe's first experience with a layoff; he had previously been laid off from his senior art director position at the e-commerce company Boxed around March 2023, shortly before the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. His job search after Boxed was described as particularly difficult, partly due to being out of the job market for nine years as hiring began to slow across the U.S.
Lowe's job search after the StubHub layoff involved applying for numerous positions through platforms like LinkedIn and Indeed, and reaching out to his professional network for leads. He noted that the benefits of networking were limited as many in his circle were also unemployed. The rejections were difficult, but Lowe indicated he felt mentally stronger compared to his previous job search, understanding that external factors often played a role.
As his unemployment benefits began to diminish, and having moved into a more expensive apartment six months prior to the layoff, Lowe relied on his background in the hospitality industry to work as a restaurant host. He eventually landed a new full-time role, which, however, came with a steep pay cut compared to his previous compensation at StubHub.
The broader hiring landscape has been sluggish, with U.S. businesses hiring at one of the slowest rates since 2013. As of May, more than a quarter of unemployed workers had been searching for 27 weeks or more, marking the highest level since December 2021. This environment, shaped by cost-cutting, economic uncertainty, and AI adoption, has led many job seekers to accept part-time work or full-time offers with reduced pay.
According to Business Insider, Lowe is among several job seekers who have navigated a difficult employment market.
