Fox has announced its intention to acquire the streaming platform Roku in a deal valued at approximately $22 billion. The announcement was made on Monday, signifying a major development in the streaming industry.
Roku currently operates as a key intermediary for numerous streaming services, providing access for viewers to platforms such as Netflix, Disney Plus, and Hulu. The platform is utilized in more than 100 million homes worldwide, establishing it as one of the most popular streaming device and smart TV platforms.
Fox's CEO, Lachlan Murdoch, stated during an investor call that the plan is to keep the two companies separate post-acquisition. The strategic aim for Fox is to expand its business by integrating its content, including Fox Sports, news programming, and local stations, directly into the Roku platform.
According to The Verge, the acquisition may not lead to changes in Roku's recognizable purple interface, but it could grant Fox control over user data.
