Germany Dominates Curacao 7-1, Netherlands Draws Japan 2-2 in World Cup 2026 Openers
The 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America opened with a spectacle of attacking football on Sunday. Germany secured a resounding 7-1 victory over Curacao in Group E, with seven different players scoring goals. Meanwhile, the Netherlands was held to a 2-2 draw by Japan in Group F, relinquishing their lead twice in a tight contest. Cape Verde is also set to make their World Cup debut against European champions Spain.
Germany launched their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dominant 7-1 win over Curacao in their opening Group E fixture at Houston's NRG Stadium. Felix Nmecha opened the scoring for Germany after six minutes, followed by Curacao's Livano Comenencia equalizing 15 minutes later. Germany then took control, leading 3-1 at halftime with goals from Nico Schlotterbeck and Kai Havertz. The second half saw further goals from Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown, Deniz Undav, and Kai Havertz, marking Germany's first 7-1 triumph since the 2014 semi-finals against Brazil. Curacao, the smallest nation by both size and population to participate in a World Cup, struggled against the four-time world champions. Germany is scheduled to face Cote d’Ivoire next.
In a contrasting Group F match at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the Netherlands and Japan played to a 2-2 draw. After a scoreless first half, Virgil van Dijk gave the Netherlands the lead six minutes after the break. Japan quickly responded, with Keito Nakamura leveling the score six minutes later. Cryscencio Summerville restored the Dutch lead, but Koki Ogawa secured Japan's second equalizer with a header from a corner. The Netherlands extended their unbeaten run in World Cup group-stage matches to 17 but may view the result as two points dropped after surrendering the lead twice.
Looking ahead, Cape Verde is preparing for their first-ever World Cup appearance since becoming an independent nation in 1975. They are set to face reigning European champions Spain in their inaugural match, which will take place in Atlanta. Spain is considered a strong contender for the trophy, while Cape Verde aims to limit the damage in this anticipated 'David vs Goliath' encounter.
