Google has issued an update to its guide on optimizing for AI Search, providing a clarification regarding LLMS.txt files. The company explicitly stated that the inclusion of LLMS.txt files on a website will not affect its search rankings in Google, either positively or negatively.
Google made it clear that Google Search does not use LLMS.txt files. Furthermore, the updated guidance specifies that Google Search does not utilize AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search, including its generative AI functionalities.
While Google may discover, crawl, and index various types of files on a website, in addition to HTML, this process does not mean that such files are treated in a special manner for search ranking purposes.
The company also added a note indicating that it is acceptable for website owners to create and maintain LLMS.txt files, or similar files, for use with other services or systems that may require them.
