Google Messages Developing Feature to Detect AI-Generated and Edited Images
Google Messages is reportedly working on integrating a system that will allow users to identify whether images shared in chats are generated or edited by artificial intelligence. This upcoming feature aims to differentiate between fully AI-created visuals and those modified with AI tools. The functionality, which is currently under development, could incorporate systems like the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity’s (C2PA) Content Credentials for image analysis.

Google Messages is reportedly developing a new system designed to help users determine if images shared within chat conversations are AI-generated or have been edited using artificial intelligence.
The proposed system is expected to distinguish between images entirely created by AI and those where AI was utilized for editing purposes. This functionality is not yet active, but development is reportedly making progress.
The initiative addresses the increasing prevalence of AI-manipulated and AI-generated imagery encountered across various digital platforms. While tools for recognizing such content exist, their current use often involves manual processes.
Existing systems like Google's SynthID, which was previously integrated into Gemini, and the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity’s (C2PA) Content Credentials system are available for scanning media for AI content. Google Messages appears to be preparing to analyze imagery for these C2PA credentials.
According to Android Authority, this feature is still in development.
