Guadalajara Embraces World Cup Festivities as Host City
Guadalajara's metropolitan area experienced a surge of excitement as it successfully hosted its inaugural 2026 FIFA World Cup match at Guadalajara Stadium. The event, held on the same day as the tournament opener in Mexico City, drew thousands of local fans and international visitors who celebrated Mexico's 2-1 victory over South Africa. Fan zones across Guadalajara and Zapopan offered communal viewing and festivities, though Friday saw rainstorms temporarily disrupt some celebrations.
Guadalajara's metropolitan zone immersed itself in FIFA World Cup festivities following its successful hosting of a 2026 World Cup match. This event at Guadalajara Stadium (Estadio Akron) coincided with the tournament's opener in Mexico City on Thursday.
Fans and visitors flocked to the streets throughout the weekend, celebrating Mexico’s 2-1 victory over South Africa. Dedicated fan zones in Guadalajara and Zapopan became central hubs for collective viewing and celebrations, offering a variety of refreshments and local culinary options like tacos de barbacoa and Tequila popsicles.
However, celebrations faced a temporary setback on Friday due to violent rainstorms. The metro zone experienced flooding, leading to the suspension of afternoon fan events, including during the U.S.-Paraguay match. The University of Guadalajara’s Fut Fest fan zone on Zapopan’s north side, featuring a large screen, was among the venues affected.
Among the attendees were a pair of Czech visitors from Vancouver, who shared their experience of their team's 1-2 loss against South Korea at Guadalajara Stadium and the subsequent three-hour journey back to their accommodation. Despite logistical challenges, they commended Guadalajara’s hospitality and food. Harry, a Seoul native, expressed joy over South Korea's victory but noted the US $3,000 asking price for tickets to his team's next match, prompting him to plan a trip to Monterrey, Nuevo León, instead.
First-time visitors to Guadalajara frequently observed a notable contrast between international media reports focusing on Jalisco’s cartel violence and the peaceful, enjoyable city they encountered firsthand during the event.
According to Mexico News Daily, the city continued to host enthusiastic crowds despite the weather interruptions.
