Hafizabad DPO Transferred After Alleged Dispute Over Office Toilet Use
Hafizabad District Police Officer (DPO) Kamran Hamid has been transferred from his post following an alleged altercation with the son of a ruling party MPA. The dispute reportedly stemmed from the use of the DPO's office toilet, leading to an inquiry ordered by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Punjab Inspector General of Police Abdul Kareem conducted the probe, which found Hamid responsible, resulting in his transfer to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority.
Hafizabad District Police Officer (DPO) Kamran Hamid, a BS-18 police officer, has been transferred from his position following an alleged dispute with the son of a local Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) from the ruling party. The incident, centered on the use of the DPO's office toilet, led to an inquiry ordered by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Chief Minister Nawaz had directed Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdul Kareem to investigate the matter and determine responsibility. The inquiry reportedly found Mr. Hamid guilty, leading to his subsequent transfer.
The dispute began when Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Shahid Bhatti visited the DPO’s office with his son and constituents. This visit aligned with instructions from the Chief Minister for ruling party parliamentarians to resolve local police-related issues in the presence of district police heads.
During the meeting, the MPA's son reportedly entered the DPO’s retiring room, ostensibly to use the toilet. Upon his exit, the DPO reportedly questioned his use of what he termed his "personal" washroom without permission. The MPA’s son allegedly responded that it was a public office, not a personal washroom. An exchange of words followed, with the police officer reportedly telling the MPA’s son to "get lost."
After the MPA and his son left, individuals accompanying them reportedly declared the DPO’s conduct an insult to a key political figure, escalating the tension. A leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) later uploaded a critical social media post related to the incident.
The MPA brought the matter to the attention of PML-N senior politician Saira Afzal Tarar, who then raised it with the Punjab Chief Minister. Lobbying for the DPO’s transfer reportedly began, intensifying with a social media campaign by PML-N workers in Hafizabad. The MPA and his son also formally complained to IGP Abdul Kareem.
During the inquiry, DPO Hamid reportedly explained to the IGP that he had objected to the use of his office washroom due to personal belongings and official files in his retiring room. However, the IGP was reportedly dissatisfied with this explanation and submitted his findings to the Chief Minister. Based on this report, Mr. Kamran Hamid was transferred to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA), described as a relatively low-profile position.
Following the transfer, a social media post attributed to a member of the Tarar family emerged, stating "now you get lost," an apparent taunt to the outgoing police officer. The episode generated extensive discussion on social media, with many users questioning Mr. Hamid’s conduct and sparking a wider debate on the public's right to use government officials’ washrooms. Reports also indicate that a group of senior police officers defended Kamran Hamid, requesting a better posting for him to uphold the dignity of the department and the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP).
