Haiti's World Cup Appearance Carries Hopes for Peace

Haiti's participation in the men's World Cup is seen as a beacon of hope for a nation grappling with widespread conflict. The team's first appearance in 52 years offers a rare opportunity for national unity, drawing parallels to a past event where football momentarily brought peace.

In 2004, an exhibition match between then-world champions Brazil and Haiti in Port-au-Prince reportedly brought the capital to a standstill for two days, during which violence temporarily ceased. Haitian journalist Pierre Richard Midy recalled an "atmosphere of peace," noting that gangs seemed "ready to turn the page and cease fire." Thousands of locals lined the streets, waving Brazilian flags, showcasing their passion for football and their connection to Brazil, which has played roles in peacekeeping and humanitarian aid in Haiti.

This year, Haitians are preparing to support their own team on the world stage, with streets cleaned and flags hung. Fans are finding innovative ways to watch the action despite chronic electricity shortages. Haiti is placed in Group C, alongside Brazil, Scotland, and Morocco.

The nation faces severe challenges, including widespread gang control and a humanitarian crisis exacerbated by natural disasters like the 2010 earthquake.
