India's S. Jaishankar Addresses Shifting US Stance on Russian Oil Imports
India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has highlighted what he described as shifting US policies regarding India's purchase of Russian oil, stating the US initially asked India to buy it, then levied a tariff, before lifting it. Jaishankar also criticized the "moral ambiguity" of European nations. India became a major buyer of Russian oil after US sanctions were imposed on Russia in 2022 following its invasion of Ukraine.
S. Jaishankar, India's External Affairs Minister, has spoken out regarding the evolving position of the United States on India's imports of Russian oil. He indicated that the US had at one point encouraged India to purchase Russian oil.
Jaishankar further stated that the US had initially imposed a tariff on Russian oil, which was subsequently lifted. These remarks contextualize India's role as a significant buyer of Russian oil, a trend that began after the US enacted sanctions against Russia in 2022.
The US sanctions were implemented in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. As part of these measures, the US also introduced a price cap on Russian oil.
In addition to addressing US policy, Jaishankar also reportedly criticized the "moral ambiguity" he observed among European nations concerning the broader geopolitical situation. (Source: NDTV World)
