The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in Indonesia has apprehended eight high-ranking immigration officials, including then Deputy Minister Silmy Karim, in connection with an alleged US$8 million visa scandal. Alongside these officials, nine visa agents were also detained by the KPK last week.
The arrests stem from accusations that the individuals were involved in extorting foreigners. These foreigners were reportedly seeking to obtain residency and work permits within Indonesia.
According to observers, this significant immigration corruption scandal could pose a substantial challenge to Indonesia's efforts to attract foreign investment and skilled talent. There are concerns that the incident may further diminish investor confidence in the nation, which is recognized as Southeast Asia's biggest economy.
