Iran played to a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in their World Cup 2026 opener, held at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The match saw Iran twice come from behind to salvage a point, overcoming a series of challenges to participate in the tournament.
Elijah Just of New Zealand opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Iran's captain Mehdi Taremi hit the post before Ramin Rezaeian netted an equalizer in the 32nd minute. Just scored his second goal for the All Whites 10 minutes into the second half, but Mohammad Mohebbi leveled the score again for Iran with a header.
Leading up to the World Cup, Iran faced significant obstacles. The team contended with the backdrop of a bombing campaign launched by the United States and Israel, leading to concerns about their tournament participation. They were also forced to change their training venue from the US to Mexico due to visa issues, and 11 non-playing officials were reportedly blocked from entering the United States for the team's matches.
Inside the stadium, 'Lion and Sun' flags, symbols of Iran before the 1979 Islamic revolution, were displayed despite FIFA's attempts to ban them. The Iranian diaspora in Los Angeles booed the anthem before the game, but overwhelmingly supported the team throughout the match, differentiating them from the regime.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, both teams had opportunities to win the match, but it concluded with a 2-2 draw.
