DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed that the upcoming HBO television series featuring Jimmy Olsen will also include Gorilla Grodd. Gunn clarified on Threads that the project is "both a Jimmy Olsen AND a Gorilla Grodd show" and is one of his favorite projects, with filming scheduled to begin soon.
This clarification follows an earlier statement from DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, who indicated that a Gorilla Grodd HBO show would begin shooting this year. The news had raised questions regarding the nature of the previously rumored Jimmy Olsen series.
Skyler Gisondo portrayed Jimmy Olsen in last year's Superman film, with the character being identified as a potential candidate for a spinoff. Gorilla Grodd, a super-intelligent ape with powers including super strength, speed, telepathy, and telekinesis, first appeared in The Flash #106 in May 1959.
Earlier reports from Variety suggested that DC Studios and HBO Max were developing a fictional true crime docuseries titled "DC Crime," which would be presented by Jimmy Olsen and focus on Gorilla Grodd in its first season. However, Gunn denied this title in a separate Threads post, stating, "It is not and has never been called DC Crime." The official name and specific integration into the broader DC Universe remain undisclosed.
The DC Universe is set to continue with "Supergirl" this summer and "Man of Tomorrow" next year. Safran also noted that once Gunn completes "Man of Tomorrow," further details about the DCU's future post-2027 will be shared, with plans already clear for the next few years. Other confirmed projects include the HBO show "Lanterns" and movies "Clayface," "Supergirl," and "Man of Tomorrow." The "Booster Gold" and "Paradise Lost" shows are still active, but "The Authority" movie, previously announced, will not move forward due to significant issues.
