Aaron Sorkin is set to release "The Social Reckoning," a companion film to his 2010 Oscar-winning movie, "The Social Network." Sorkin, who wrote the original screenplay, will take on both writing and directing duties for this follow-up.
The new film centers on Facebook engineer Frances Haugen, who became a whistleblower. Mikey Madison will portray Haugen, with Jeremy Strong cast as Mark Zuckerberg. Jeremy Allen White will appear as Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz. The script is based on The Wall Street Journal's "The Facebook Files," an investigative series exploring Facebook's impact on youth mental health, misinformation, and the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
Sorkin has expressed a long-standing interest in revisiting Facebook's story, particularly what he described as "the dark side of Facebook." This interest intensified following the publication of "The Facebook Files."
Jesse Eisenberg, who earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg in "The Social Network," declined to reprise the role. Sorkin indicated that Eisenberg did not wish to be further associated with Mark Zuckerberg.
"The Social Reckoning" is scheduled to open in theaters on October 9.
According to Business Insider, Sony is set to release the film.
