Jesse Eisenberg Declined 'The Social Reckoning' Role Due to Issues With Mark Zuckerberg, Aaron Sorkin Says
Jesse Eisenberg reportedly turned down the opportunity to reprise his role as Mark Zuckerberg in 'The Social Reckoning,' the upcoming follow-up to 'The Social Network.' Writer and director Aaron Sorkin spent three days attempting to convince Eisenberg, who previously earned an Oscar nomination for playing Zuckerberg. Sorkin indicated that Eisenberg's decision stemmed from personal issues with Zuckerberg and a reluctance to be continually associated with the tech figure.

Jesse Eisenberg, known for his portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher's 2010 film 'The Social Network,' declined to return for its follow-up, 'The Social Reckoning.' Writer and director Aaron Sorkin spent three days attempting to persuade Eisenberg to reprise the role, according to Sorkin.
Sorkin stated that Eisenberg did not want to be conflated with Mark Zuckerberg anymore and "has his problems with the guy." He also referenced Eisenberg's dislike for being approached by fans with business cards referencing a line from the original film, suggesting the actor wished to distance himself from the public perception tied to the role.
Eisenberg himself previously commented on his decision in October 2025, explaining that he felt he had "outgrown" the part. He clarified that his reasons were unrelated to the quality of the upcoming film and that he remains friends with Sorkin.
'The Social Reckoning' aims to explore the effects of the social media platform on its users years after its creation. In Eisenberg's absence, Succession actor Jeremy Strong has been cast as an older Mark Zuckerberg. Strong reportedly expressed interest in the role to Sorkin if Eisenberg decided not to return.
'The Social Network' earned Eisenberg an Actor in a Leading Role Oscar nomination. 'The Social Reckoning' is set to premiere on October 9, 2026.
