Jordan Qualifies for First FIFA World Cup, Set to Face Argentina

Jordan is poised to make its debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, achieving a long-held national dream. The team qualified by winning eight of its 16 qualification matches, drawing five, and losing three.

Their tournament schedule includes an opening game against Austria and a final group stage encounter with world champions Argentina on June 27. Jordan is one of four nations making their inaugural appearance at the 2026 World Cup.

The country's journey to football's grandest stage has been extensive. Jordan played its first international match in 1953, a 3-1 defeat to Syria, and first entered World Cup qualifying for the 1986 tournament. Their closest previous attempt to qualify was in 2014, where they reached an inter-confederation play-off but ultimately lost 5-0 on aggregate to a Uruguay side featuring players like Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani.

Following the 2014 campaign, the Jordan Football Association (JFA) sought to enhance its national team, notably hiring former England captain Ray Wilkins as manager in September 2014 and later Harry Redknapp for a two-game contract during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. These appointments were spearheaded by former JFA president Prince Ali Bin al-Hussein.

After these endeavors, the JFA re-evaluated its strategy, shifting focus from high-profile names to a long-term cultural and strategic approach. Since Redknapp's tenure, Jordan has appointed seven managers, with six coming from predominantly Arabic nations, including two from Jordan itself. This strategic evolution has been observed as transforming blueprints into tangible results through talent management and operational optimization.
