JPMorgan Hosts Lavish Event for SpaceX Employees Post-IPO
JPMorgan recently hosted an extravagant celebration for approximately 250 SpaceX employees at its new Park Avenue headquarters, following the rocket-making company's initial public offering. The event, conceived by CEO Jamie Dimon and reportedly pitched to Elon Musk, featured a multi-course dinner, cocktails, and a SpaceX-themed light show culminating the evening. While honoring one of the year's significant IPOs, the gathering also served to cultivate relationships with potential new wealth management clients among the estimated 4,400 new millionaires created by the offering.
JPMorgan recently hosted an extravagant celebration for approximately 250 SpaceX employees at its new Park Avenue headquarters. The event followed SpaceX's initial public offering (IPO), which saw its shares jump by as much as 30% to $176.52 per share after pricing at $135.
The lavish evening, an initiative of JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, reportedly included a pitch to Elon Musk. Guests were treated to a dinner buffet on the 57th floor, featuring options such as a SpaceX-branded tomahawk steak, sushi, and a raw bar. Festivities also included a cake replica of SpaceX headquarters. The celebration concluded with a SpaceX-themed skyline light show projected from the top of the 60-story building, depicting rocket launches and space imagery.
Beyond acknowledging a significant market debut, the event also served as a strategic opportunity for JPMorgan to engage with potential future wealth management clients. Andrew Benson, founder of Hill Markets, estimates the SpaceX IPO created approximately 4,400 new millionaires, including about 400 centimillionaires.
While Elon Musk was not scheduled to attend, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and CFO Bret Johnson were expected to be present and deliver remarks. JPMorgan's deal team and Mary Erdoes, head of the bank's asset and wealth management business, also attended.
Throughout the day, JPMorgan's headquarters immersed visitors in the IPO theme. A space-themed playlist curated by DJ Yuna played in the lobby and social areas, and servers on the 14th floor were dressed in SpaceX garb. Digital screens across the building displayed SpaceX launch photos and videos. The bank also showcased its art and historical artifact collection, including documents signed by historical figures such as Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, and Jamie Wyeth's 1976 painting "The Man from Boston" related to John F. Kennedy's 1962 "We Choose to Go to the Moon" speech.
The specially curated light show at the skyscraper's summit was visible to the wider New York City area, capping off the intergalaxy-inspired evening. JPMorgan is noted as one of the top Wall Street banks involved in running the books for the IPO. (Source: Business Insider)
