Jurgen Klopp Apologizes to Germany Coach Julian Nagelsmann for Controversial Comment
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has issued an apology to Germany's head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, regarding a controversial remark made during his role as a World Cup pundit. The comment, concerning Nagelsmann's starting line-up for Germany's World Cup 2026 opener against Curacao, sparked debate despite Germany securing a 7-1 victory. Klopp expressed regret for his choice of words, which were perceived as questioning Nagelsmann's position.
Jurgen Klopp, the former manager of Liverpool, has formally apologized to Germany's head coach, Julian Nagelsmann. The apology stems from a comment Klopp made while serving as a pundit for the World Cup 2026 opener, a Group E clash where Germany defeated Curacao 7-1.
The controversial remark, made on Magenta TV in Houston, was: "luckily, Julian Nagelsmann is picking the team, still.” Thomas Müller, also on the broadcast, responded with laughter, stating, "Kloppo, we are still in June. You are already in September." The word “still” caused debate, interpreted by some as casting doubt on Nagelsmann's future as coach.
Klopp later offered his apology directly to Nagelsmann during an interview, stating, “We’re also informally part of the team, we’re absolutely on your side.” He acknowledged his regret for the comment, saying, “I’ve already discovered the most hated word of the year: still. I could have punched myself in the face for that, but it was already too late and I was on TV. It just slipped out casually, and has absolutely no relevance.” Klopp, who will turn 59 on Tuesday, added, "I’m still an idiot."
Klopp, who left Anfield in 2024 after winning the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool, currently serves as head of Global Soccer at Red Bull. He assured Nagelsmann of his full support, stating, “We are completely on your side, whatever you do with this… Nothing will come of it that is intended to disrupt the process here.”
Germany's 7-1 victory over Curacao has provided a strong start to their World Cup campaign, following group stage eliminations in the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. Germany is scheduled to play Ivory Coast on June 20, followed by Ecuador five days later in their final group match.
