Kansas City Serves as World Cup Base for England, Argentina, and Others
Kansas City, which identifies itself as the “Soccer Capital of America,” is serving as a primary base for multiple national teams participating in the current World Cup. Among the teams hosted are England, reigning champions Argentina, the Netherlands, and Algeria. The city's role as a host follows a significant investment of nearly $700 million in football infrastructure, aimed at supporting the tournament's demands. Officials highlight Kansas City's passionate sports culture and world-class facilities as key factors in attracting these international squads.
Kansas City has been designated a significant hub for this year's World Cup, providing a base for several national teams throughout the tournament. Contending team England, alongside reigning champions Argentina, the Netherlands, and Algeria, have all established their World Cup headquarters in and around the Midwest metropolis.
The city's selection as a host venue came after it stepped in following Chicago's withdrawal. Kansas City has since invested approximately $700 million (£522m) in infrastructure to support its football scene. This includes facilities for MLS side Sporting Kansas City and NWSL outfit KC Current, both of which have purpose-built stadiums.
England's base is located at the Inn at Meadowbrook, with training sessions held at Swope Soccer Village, home to Sporting Kansas City’s second team. The Football Association had initially sought the Compass Minerals National Performance Center, but this facility was secured by Argentina due to their status as defending champions and their scheduled matches in the city. The Netherlands are utilizing KC Current’s facilities, while Algeria is based at the University of Kansas.
Pam Kramer, chief executive of KC2026, expressed enthusiasm regarding the city's role, stating, “The arrival of one of the world’s most followed national teams is a significant moment for our city. England’s decision to base themselves in Kansas City reflects our passionate sports culture, our spirit of hospitality and the world-class facilities that define our region.” She also noted pride in hosting four nations during the tournament.
Kansas City is also hosting two of the six fixtures in Group J, which includes Lionel Scaloni’s side. Beyond the team bases, the city is presenting a Fifa Fan Festival, which saw an estimated 25,000 fans attend to watch the United States’ opening match against Paraguay, a 4-1 victory for the co-hosts. The festival features performances by artists such as Flo Rida, Sheryl Crow, and The Chainsmokers.
