LinkedIn Emerges as Top-Cited Source for Professional Queries in AI Search
LinkedIn has become the number one most-cited domain by AI search engines for professional inquiries. Research by Profound indicates a rapid rise, with LinkedIn climbing from outside the top 20 to the fifth position on ChatGPT within three months for such queries. This shift highlights a growing importance of individual-published content, including posts and articles, over traditional company profiles in AI-driven search results, particularly for B2B and technology sectors.

LinkedIn has rapidly become the leading domain cited across major AI search platforms for professional queries. This notable ascent was identified by research from Profound, a platform that tracks the citation of brands and domains across large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. According to their findings, LinkedIn moved from outside the top 20 to the fifth spot on ChatGPT for professional queries in just three months.
The nature of the content being cited on LinkedIn has also undergone a significant change. Profound's data reveals a clear shift from individual profile pages toward published content, including posts, articles, and comments from real people. Citations for profile pages decreased by 19.4 percentage points, dropping from 33.9% to 14.5%. Conversely, feed posts saw an increase of 5.1 percentage points, rising from 20.9% to 26.0%, and long-form articles grew by 2.9 percentage points, from 6.0% to 8.9%.
This trend suggests that AI engines are increasingly drawing information from content actively published by individuals, rather than solely from static company pages. This development holds particular significance for B2B and technology businesses, as a deliberate LinkedIn strategy focused on individual contributions is becoming a high-leverage move.
AI engines appear to reward consistent publishing by team members using their own voice and engaging actively in comments. This approach, sometimes referred to as employee advocacy or a "team of creators," helps teach AI engines to cite specific businesses over time, offering a compounding advantage for early adopters. Data from Buffer further supports this, showing a 36% growth in LinkedIn channel connections over the past year, with personal profile connections outperforming company page connections by 25%.
According to Buffer Resources, these insights underline a critical direction for businesses aiming to enhance their visibility and influence within the evolving landscape of AI-driven search.
