Major Retailers Detail Price Matching Policies for Shoppers
Several major retailers offer price-matching policies designed to help consumers secure the best deals on purchases. These policies, which vary significantly by store, can be particularly useful during major shopping events. Details for Amazon, Target, and Best Buy highlight different approaches to adjusting prices based on competitor offers or internal store pricing.
To prevent customer dissatisfaction and encourage in-store purchases, some retailers have implemented price-matching policies. These policies allow customers to receive a lower price if an item is found cheaper elsewhere, or if its price drops shortly after purchase. Such information is valuable year-round, especially during sales events like Amazon's Prime Day 2026, scheduled from June 23rd to June 26th.
Each retailer maintains specific rules and restrictions regarding price matching. Generally, marketplace sellers and wholesale retailers like Costco and Sam's Club often do not offer price protection. It is also noted that traditional stores may not match prices from these types of outlets. Consumers are advised that even if a formal policy doesn't exist, inquiring with customer service about potential price adjustments can sometimes result in an exception.
Amazon explicitly states it does not offer price matching. While customer support is available, price adjustments are unlikely, even for Prime members. However, Amazon's return policy allows customers to return items and repurchase them at a lower price if one becomes available.
Target's policy no longer includes matching prices from external retailers like Amazon. Instead, Target allows price adjustments if an identical qualifying item is found for less on Target.com, at a local Target store, or through an eligible Target Circle deal. Price matches also apply to Target Plus Partner items if the same partner offers it for less on Target.com or via a Target Circle deal. Requests can be made at the time of purchase or within 14 days, requiring an online price or digital ad and the original receipt or packing slip; screenshots are not accepted. Exclusions include in-store matches from other Target stores, certain promotions, and specific item conditions such as clearance or damaged goods. Target also does not match prices between items sold directly by Target and those sold by third-party Target Plus Partner sellers.
Best Buy's Price Match Guarantee applies to new, identical products immediately available from a qualifying competitor or on its site, provided they are not on Best Buy's exclusion list. This list includes items sold from the Thursday before Thanksgiving Day through the Monday after Thanksgiving. Products must have identical model numbers and colors. Best Buy only matches prices available to all customers, excluding discounts specific to membership, loyalty programs, or paid memberships. The policy does not cover products listed on their exclusion list.
