Meg Whitman Advises Strategic Global Expansion Over Widespread Presence
Former HP and eBay CEO Meg Whitman stated that expanding into a large number of countries is not inherently beneficial, citing her experience that a limited number of markets generated the majority of revenue and profit. She advocated for a more focused approach, similar to eBay's expansion into approximately 30 countries. Tubi CEO Anjali Sud also discussed evolving strategies for scaling companies, noting shifts in market entry challenges from platform synergies to local regulatory and cultural issues.

Meg Whitman, former CEO of eBay and HP, shared her insights on global expansion strategy during an appearance at Fortune Brainstorm Tech. Whitman emphasized that expanding into numerous countries does not guarantee success, stating, "It is not a badge of honor to be in 120 countries." She recalled HP's peak expansion into 190 countries, noting that 40 of those markets accounted for 85% of revenue and 125% of profits. Whitman suggested a more concentrated approach, similar to eBay's strategy of expanding into around 30 countries, as a "really smart thing to do."
Anjali Sud, CEO of Fox-owned Tubi, joined Whitman to discuss the evolution of scaling strategies over the past two decades. Sud, who previously led Vimeo, highlighted that the primary hurdles for market entry have shifted. While achieving platform synergies across technology used to be the main challenge, contemporary difficulties are often related to local regulatory, cultural, and data privacy issues.
Sud also commented that for companies that quickly achieve product-market fit, speed should be the highest priority to solidify their market position.
Separately, Whitman offered her perspective on corporate culture, asserting that in-office mandates are crucial for building skills among younger workers. She stated that she would "force people back to the office" if she were running a company today, viewing it as essential for professional development.
According to Fortune, these remarks were made at the 25th annual Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference.
