Meta has announced a program to donate Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses to every eligible blind veteran in America, aiming to provide transformative technology that enhances independence. Over 130,000 legally blind American veterans are eligible for these voice-controlled smart glasses, which assist with tasks such as identifying objects and reading text. The initiative includes comprehensive training and support to ensure effective use of the technology, collaborating with several veteran support organizations.
Meta has initiated a program to provide Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses to all eligible blind veterans across America. This effort aims to offer transformative artificial intelligence technology that supports daily independence for more than 130,000 legally blind American veterans.
Eligible veterans can request their pair of Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses through bva.org/glasses. Veteran organizations seeking to assist their members or other eligible blinded veterans can apply for glasses through TechSoup.
The glasses are designed to help users identify objects, read text, and manage everyday tasks using only their voice. This represents a significant advancement in daily autonomy, as highlighted by veteran Don Overton, who noted the return of his independence through the technology.
Each pair of glasses includes access to dedicated training resources. These include monthly live webinars hosted by the Blinded Veterans Association (BVA) in partnership with TechSoup, offering troubleshooting and Q&A sessions. Additionally, Meta and partner organizations will host in-person events nationwide to distribute glasses, provide hands-on guidance, and foster community among participants. The BVA has also developed a specific training guide for blind and low-vision veterans, covering activation of voice commands, document reading, phone call management, and navigation of daily tasks.
Meta President and Vice-Chairman Dina Powell McCormick stated the company's commitment to reaching every blind veteran in America. The initiative involves partnerships with organizations such as the Blinded Veterans Association, Tunnel to Towers, Homes for Our Troops, Lighthouse Guild, American Council of the Blind, National Industries for the Blind, and Oscar Mike, ensuring both donation and comprehensive training.
According to Meta Newsroom, Meta Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth emphasized the honor of providing technology that helps veterans meaningfully navigate the world after sacrificing their sight in service.
