Meta Updates Personalization and User Data Controls
Meta is implementing changes to how it utilizes information shared by other businesses to personalize user experiences across its applications and services. The updates aim to enhance the relevance of content in feeds and AI responses, in addition to existing ad personalization efforts. As part of this overhaul, Meta is also streamlining user control settings, consolidating options for managing activity data from external businesses.

Meta customizes the experiences for its 3.5 billion daily users, aiming to help them navigate its apps and services more efficiently. Personalized advertisements currently assist users in discovering relevant content, such as local businesses or products, while also supporting the free availability of Meta's services.
Businesses frequently share information regarding user activity on their websites with Meta to improve the relevance of advertisements. Under the new approach, Meta will expand the use of this data, which includes information like games played or purchases made on other websites. This information will now also be used to personalize other aspects of the user experience, including content displayed in the Feed and responses generated by AI.
To streamline user controls, Meta is phasing out the "Your activity off Meta technologies" setting. Instead, the company is expanding the functionality of the "Activity from other businesses" setting, which was previously known as "Activity information from ad partners." This updated setting will allow users to manage how their activity data is utilized to personalize both advertisements and non-ad content.
Users who permit the use of this data will receive more relevant ads and other content. Conversely, if users opt out, Meta will not utilize this information for enhanced personalization of ads or other content. Meta has stated that no new data is being collected as part of these changes; the update solely concerns the expanded application of existing information that businesses already share.
These control and data-use modifications are scheduled to be implemented in the United States and several other countries next month, with a broader rollout to additional countries to follow. Users can visit Meta's Help Center for the latest information.
According to Meta Newsroom, these changes are designed to further improve the user experience through enhanced personalization.
