Mexican Artists Interpret Culture Through Soccer in 'A Lot Of Balls' Exhibit
Magda, a restaurant and cultural space in Mexico City, is hosting an exhibit titled "A Lot Of Balls." The display features 100 multidisciplinary Mexican artists who have each interpreted a soccer ball as a canvas. This initiative aims to explore identity, community, and diverse perspectives through the symbolism of the sport. The exhibit, which opened in April, is scheduled to run until July 19.
Mexico City is preparing to showcase its cultural offerings as the country is set to be a host nation for the World Cup for the third time. The city anticipates a summer filled with soccer and celebrations, with numerous fútbol-themed events planned.
Among these events, Magda, a restaurant and cultural space located in a 400-year-old building in San Ángel, Mexico City, has opened a thematic exhibit titled "A Lot Of Balls." The venue is situated approximately 20 minutes by car from Estadio Banorte (formerly Estadio Azteca).
The exhibit showcases 100 multidisciplinary Mexican artists and creators. Each participant was invited to submit a soccer ball of their own making, interpreting it in a way that represents their identity, community, and views without restriction. The participating artists include visual artists, painters, illustrators, architects, fashion designers, and writers.
Examples of the interpretations include artist Atrapaluz (Adan Days), who created a papier-mâché ball titled "Fútbol Actual." This piece features a collage of hand-drawn dollar bills representing the corporatized aspects of the sport, alongside a golden segment depicting two children playing soccer. Architect Adán Cárabes submitted "El Conejo de la Luna," a plain white ball with a red rabbit silhouette and a circular steel sculpture, blending minimalism with indigenous symbology. Other contributions include a colorful piñata soccer ball by designer Alexis Del Toro and "Tonalli" by fine artist APKO (Ana Paula Kuri), a partially deconstructed ball in bronze hues, named after the Nahuatl word for heat and sun.
The "A Lot Of Balls" exhibit commenced in April and will remain on display at Magda until July 19.
