Many Mexican fans are resorting to credit cards, personal loans, and installment plans to finance their attendance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches, according to a survey by debt management firm Bravo. The high cost, with ticket prices reportedly soaring by up to 584% compared to the 2024 World Cup in Qatar, is driving this reliance on financing options. An estimated 62% of fans attending the opening match used some form of credit, with individual spending potentially reaching 30,000 to 60,000 pesos (US $1,744 to $3,489) for the overall experience including travel and lodging.
Mexican football enthusiasts are increasingly utilizing credit to cover the expenses associated with attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A survey conducted by debt management firm Bravo indicates that fans may spend between 30,000 and 60,000 pesos (US $1,744 and $3,489) on elements such as match tickets, transportation, accommodation, food, and souvenirs.
The survey revealed that 62% of Mexican fans who attended Thursday’s World Cup opener financed their tickets through credit. Delving deeper into payment methods, 38% of respondents used debit cards, cash, or planned savings. The remaining 62% relied on financing options, with 31% using credit cards for monthly installments, 25% paying the full amount with a credit card with the aim of settling the balance by the next billing date, and 6% opting for a personal loan.
Ticket prices for the event have reportedly increased by up to 584% when compared to the 2024 World Cup in Qatar, contributing to the need for financing. The reliance on credit for entertainment carries potential future financial concerns, as 43% of respondents acknowledged a real risk of accumulating new debt after the World Cup.
Travel plans extend beyond Mexico for many fans, with 55% of respondents intending to travel to the United States or Canada for live matches. For those remaining in Mexico, spending expectations vary: 27% are willing to spend at least 10,000 pesos (US $581), another 27% anticipate spending between 6,000 and 10,000 pesos (US $348 and $581), and 46% plan to spend between 3,000 and 999 pesos (US $174 and $58) to experience the event.
In an effort to manage these expenses, 48% of respondents indicated plans to generate additional income through business opportunities or alternative jobs during the tournament. According to Mexico News Daily, this strategy aims to help balance their finances.
