Mexico City Becomes Central Hub for Mezcal's Global Boom
Mezcal, a spirit deeply rooted in Mexican identity and tradition, has experienced a significant international surge in popularity, transforming from a regional specialty to a globally recognized beverage. Mexico City now serves as a primary gateway for both locals and international visitors to explore mezcal's diverse complexities, featuring varieties from various producing states like Oaxaca, Zacatecas, Puebla, Guerrero, and Tamaulipas. The capital's flourishing mezcalerías underscore the spirit's evolving appeal and widespread availability.
Mezcal, an ancestral Mexican spirit, has long held deep cultural significance, particularly in the arid, elevated communities where it is cultivated. Historically viewed as a traditional beverage, mezcal has recently undergone an international surge in popularity, transitioning from a niche spirit to a prominent feature in the global cocktail scene. This boom has led to increased appeal, consumption, and availability worldwide.
Mexico City has emerged as a central hub for mezcal's growing acclaim, acting as a confluent gateway for individuals to experience the spirit's diverse complexity. The capital city provides access to mezcal traditions passed down by intergenerational mezcaleros from various states, including Oaxaca, Zacatecas, Puebla, Guerrero, and Tamaulipas. The proliferation of mezcalerías within Mexico City also contributes to the spirit's contemporary cachet.
Adair Robles, director of Mezcalería Finca Robles, located in Roma Norte (opened 2018) and Condesa (opened 2025), is a fourth-generation mezcal producer. His family, from Sola de Vega, Oaxaca, boasts over 350 years of mezcal-making heritage in Southern Oaxaca's sierras. Finca Robles exclusively serves the family's own small-batch mezcal.
Robles observes a profound shift in mezcal's perception, noting its evolution from a "harsh, somewhat rough-around-the-edges" spirit to one that is actively sought out, appreciated, and respected globally. He acknowledges that this growth also presents challenges, particularly concerning the protection of the agave plant, the implementation of reforestation efforts, and balancing expansion with preserving the spirit's essential nature.
Mezcalería Finca Robles aims to provide an experience grounded in historical lineage and appreciation for the craft. Beyond offering straight pours and rotating flights of family-made mezcals, the establishment also hosts cultural events and features contemporary mezcal-based cocktails.
