Mexico has unveiled its first domestically developed electric vehicle, the Olinia Uno. President Claudia Sheinbaum presented the ultra-affordable, government-backed project in June 2026, with the aim of democratizing clean urban transport across the country.
Named Olinia Uno, from the Nahuatl word for "movement," the compact mini-EV is designed for intensive city use and can accommodate six passengers. It features a 14.7 kWh battery, providing a range of approximately 100 km, and a top speed of 50 km/h. The vehicle is designed to charge from a standard household outlet, enhancing its accessibility for everyday users.
The Olinia Uno was developed by Mexican public research institutions, including the National Polytechnic Institute and TecNM. It is priced at 150,000 pesos, which is roughly equivalent to US $8,600. Production for the Olinia Uno is scheduled to commence in summer 2027.
According to Mexico News Daily, this initiative represents a significant step towards sustainable and accessible urban mobility in Mexico.
