Microsoft Introduces New Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12 Featuring Snapdragon X2 Chips
Microsoft has officially unveiled the new Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12, both equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 chips. These Copilot+ PCs are available starting today, with the Surface Laptop 8 priced from $1,599 and the Surface Pro 12 starting at $1,499, each featuring 16GB RAM and 256GB storage. Microsoft states these new devices offer significantly improved graphics performance compared to their 2024 predecessors and come with the graphic design app Affinity pre-installed.
Microsoft has formally announced the release of its new Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12, integrating Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 chips. The devices are available for purchase immediately. The Surface Laptop 8 starts at $1,599, and the Surface Pro 12 begins at $1,499. Both base configurations include 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
According to Microsoft, these next-generation Copilot+ PCs for consumers offer notable performance enhancements, with graphics performance reportedly up to 58 percent better for the Laptop 8 and 53 percent better for the Pro 12 compared to their 2024 predecessors, which utilized the original Snapdragon X series chips. To appeal to creative professionals, both new Surface devices will ship with the Affinity graphic design application pre-installed and readily accessible from their Start menus.
Andrew Hill, Microsoft's corporate VP of Surface, stated that a primary focus during the development of these new devices was ensuring fundamental performance. He emphasized investments in reliability, responsiveness, and battery life across the board. Microsoft has opted for Snapdragon models for consumers in this second generation of Surface devices, citing the high value of Qualcomm's performance per watt and battery life.
Special offers are available for early purchasers. Customers who buy a Snapdragon X2-powered Surface Laptop 8 directly from Microsoft before June 30 will receive a free Surface Arc Mouse. Those who purchase a Surface Pro 12 this month will receive a free Surface Pro 13-inch Keyboard.
The 13.8-inch Surface Laptop 8 is now available in a new "Jade" finish, alongside standard options such as Dune, Black, and Platinum. The 15-inch model of the Surface Laptop 8 features a 120Hz LCD touchscreen with an increased resolution of 3,270 x 2,180 pixels, resulting in 262 pixels per inch, which Microsoft describes as its sharpest ever on a Surface Laptop. The new Surface Laptops also incorporate a haptic trackpad supporting Windows 11's new haptic signals feature and a 1080p webcam.
Configuration options for both Surface Laptop 8 sizes include either a Snapdragon X2 Plus or X2 Elite processor. Memory ranges from 16GB to 64GB of RAM, while storage options extend from 256GB to 2TB for the 13.8-inch model and 512GB to 2TB for the 15-inch model. Battery life ratings indicate up to 20 hours of local video playback for the 13.8-inch model and up to 19 hours for the 15-inch model. Both models feature a backlit keyboard, WiFi 7, and Bluetooth capabilities.
