Mobileye, a driving technology company, has revealed plans to introduce a robotaxi service in the United States by 2027. The service is slated to launch in an as-yet-unnamed U.S. city.
The initiative will be vertically integrated, leveraging Mobileye's Moovit mobility platform. This platform will facilitate customer ride bookings and coordinate drivers, among other operational functions. The Israeli company, which was acquired by Intel in 2017 before becoming publicly traded again in 2022, stated it will commence with an initial fleet of approximately 100 robotaxis early next year as part of its overall plan.
Prof. Amnon Shashua, founder and CEO of Mobileye, commented on the development, noting that the company has dedicated over two decades to developing the necessary technologies for autonomous driving. He added that Mobileye is now combining these technologies with operational ownership to establish a financially and geographically scalable robotaxi business designed for global deployment.
Mobileye gained prominence in the mid-2010s when Tesla integrated the company's advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) into its Autopilot feature. This partnership concluded in 2016 after Mobileye expressed concerns that a driver assistance system was being marketed to consumers as fully driverless technology. Since then, Mobileye has continued to collaborate with various partners on both ADAS and autonomous vehicle projects.
