NASA Earth Observatory Presents June 2026 Satellite Image Puzzler Challenge
NASA's Earth Observatory has released its monthly satellite image challenge, featuring the "June 2026 Puzzler." The public is invited to identify the location shown in the image, provide geographical clues, and explain what makes the place interesting or unique. Participants can submit their answers through a designated form for a chance to earn "puzzler bragging rights" and be recognized by NASA. Detailed answers regarding the satellite, instrument, or geological features are encouraged.
NASA's Earth Observatory regularly features puzzling satellite images as part of a public engagement challenge. The latest iteration, dubbed the "June 2026 Satellite Puzzler," is now available for public participation.
The challenge requires participants to identify the specific location depicted in the satellite image. Entrants are encouraged to share any visible clues that led to their conclusion and to highlight what makes the identified location interesting or unique from their perspective.
Responses can be submitted via an online form, selecting "Puzzler Answer" as the topic. Submissions should include a preferred name or alias. While a simple guess of the location is sufficient, participants have the option to provide more detailed information, such as the satellite and instrument that captured the image, the spectral bands used, or subtle geological or historical details about the area.
Although no monetary prizes or trips are offered, successful participants will receive "puzzler bragging rights." The first individual to correctly identify the location will be recognized, and especially thoughtful or interesting answers may also be highlighted. The correct answer, along with a link to a more detailed Earth Observatory Image of the Day story, will be posted approximately one week after the challenge's release. Participants are advised that their submitted comments may be edited, excerpted, and published on the challenge page.
