NBA The Run Launches as Fast-Paced Arcade Basketball Game
Play by Play Studios has released "NBA The Run," an arcade-style basketball game that offers a modern take on classic streetball titles. The game features 3v3 matches within a tournament structure, emphasizing quick play sessions and varied rule sets. Designed to contrast with traditional basketball simulations like NBA 2K, "NBA The Run" focuses on exaggerated action and strategic team composition, aiming to provide an engaging multiplayer experience that respects player time.

“NBA The Run,” the debut title from Play by Play Studios, delivers a distinct arcade basketball experience, drawing inspiration from classic streetball games. The game aims to differentiate itself from simulation titles such as NBA 2K by prioritizing fast-paced, exaggerated gameplay over strict realism. The development team includes former EA Sports developers, bringing their experience to this new endeavor.
The core gameplay revolves around 3v3 matches, available in solo, co-op with friends, or online matchmaking modes. Players compete in tournaments inspired by titles like Fall Guys and the March Madness format, rather than standalone exhibition games. A championship requires securing four consecutive victories in one-game, survive-and-advance showdowns, with a loss sending players back to the start of a new tournament.
Matches are designed for quick play, typically lasting two to five minutes each, allowing a championship run to be completed in approximately 15-20 minutes. Each round introduces a randomly generated rule set, which can include scoring adjustments, such as dunks counting as three-pointers, or gameplay modifications like unlimited stamina. This dynamic rule system is intended to maintain the freshness and unpredictability of each tournament.
"NBA The Run" features a launch roster of nearly 40 players, comprising many of the NBA's top stars, including LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Scottie Barnes, Devin Booker, and Giannis. The roster also includes original characters, real-life streetball legend DJ, and former NBA Street commentator Bobbito Garcia. Player attributes significantly influence gameplay, with unique skills—such as Victor Wembanyama's blocking or Damian Lillard's speed—impacting strategic choices and team composition.
The game utilizes a brightly colored, comic-book art style, presenting exaggerated versions of players while maintaining recognizable likenesses. Courts are visually distinctive, drawing inspiration from real-world locations like Venice Beach and a Philly schoolyard. An in-game commentator acts as a hype man, providing additional flavor to the matches.
While its core gameplay and style have been noted, "NBA The Run" has some reported limitations. A practice mode called "Shootaround" is exclusively for solo play, hindering pre-game strategizing for co-op partners. Matchmaking with random players can lead to challenges, such as uncooperative teammates or AFK players, and disconnected players are replaced by less effective CPU bots. Additionally, the progression system for unlocking cosmetic rewards and in-game currency, known as "Cred," is perceived as slow, with significant rewards primarily tied to championship victories. The game is reportedly most enjoyable when played with friends, which can mitigate some of the matchmaking challenges.
According to GameSpot, "NBA The Run" delivers a fun experience, particularly when playing with a dedicated squad.
