Olivia Rodrigo unveiled her third studio album, "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love," on Friday, June 12. The album, which was previously hinted to contain 'sad love songs,' also includes a significant number of 'exuberant pop anthems,' contributing to some of its standout moments.

Tracks such as "Stupid Song" and "U + Me = <3" are highlighted as potentially following the success of Billboard Hot 100-topping tracks like "Drop Dead" and "The Cure" as the album's next singles.

The album explores various facets of relationships, moving from struggles within a partnership into breakup territory, particularly noted in the finale track, "Cigarette Smoke." Rodrigo's songwriting is described as introspective, capable of capturing precise emotional nuances within her songs. Specific tracks like "Begged," "Purple," and "Less" address different ways love can reveal insecurities or negative aspects of oneself.

In a March interview with British Vogue, Rodrigo shared her perspective on love songs, stating, "I realized all my favorite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them." She also noted her personal experience with falling in love, believing a great relationship would resolve self-esteem issues, but realizing, "it just doesn’t work like that."
