More than 1,000 Orang Asli, the indigenous people of Peninsular Malaysia, gathered outside a federal ministry in Putrajaya on Friday for a mass protest. Over 1,000 Orang Asli, identified as the indigenous people of Peninsular Malaysia, participated in a significant rally outside a federal ministry in Putrajaya on Friday.
The protest, described as a rare mass gathering, aimed to press for the recognition of their ancestral land rights. Participants also demanded a halt to evictions and development initiatives occurring on their territories.
During the march through Malaysia’s administrative capital, many attendees wore traditional headgear. They carried signs conveying messages such as “Orang Asli are not immigrants,” “Respect the Orang Asli right to self-determination,” and “Our voices will not be…”.
According to the South China Morning Post, the demonstration underscored ongoing concerns regarding indigenous land claims in the region.
