Pau Cubarsi, a 19-year-old Barcelona defender, has established himself as a notable young centre-back. As Spain gears up for its FIFA World Cup opener, Cubarsi shared insights into his growing responsibilities with Mundo Deportivo, discussing his admiration for Lionel Messi and his goals for making an impact on football's biggest stage.
Despite his youth, Cubarsi is considered an important defensive figure for Spain. He emphasized that age is not a factor he considers on the pitch. “At the end of the day, age is just a number. When you’re on the pitch, nobody looks at your age but rather at what you can do well,” Cubarsi stated. He also mentioned working on his leadership qualities, believing it helps him stay focused and assists the team.
Cubarsi noted the strong Barcelona contingent within Spain's squad, which he believes aids in building chemistry ahead of the tournament. He acknowledged the differing styles of play between Barcelona and the national team under Luis de la Fuente, stating, “No, it’s two different styles at Barça and in the national team.”
The young defender also reflected on former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol and his iconic World Cup semi-final goal. Cubarsi expressed a desire to achieve a similar moment for Spain, saying, “If it can be done, it would be magnificent. Firstly, because we’d already be in the semi-finals and that would be fantastic. And if, on top of that, I could help the team in that way, it would be spectacular.”
One of the interview's highlights was Cubarsi's discussion of Lionel Messi, whom he regards as his childhood idol. He revealed he has never met Messi in person or played against him. While he would have preferred to play alongside Messi, Cubarsi affirmed he would give his best effort if he were to face him on the field.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, Cubarsi remains focused on his development and ambitions on the global stage.
