PM Directs Expedition of 100MW Solar Power Project in Gilgit-Baltistan
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed authorities to expedite work on a 100-megawatt solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan, aiming for its earliest possible completion. During a meeting in Islamabad, the premier mandated an independent third-party validation to ensure transparency at every stage and affirmed that the federal government would cover all project expenses. This directive follows his formal approval of the project in December, intended to provide uninterrupted, affordable, and sustainable power to the region.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed relevant authorities to accelerate the development of a 100-megawatt solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), with a goal for its earliest completion.
The directives were issued during a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister in Islamabad, which reviewed the project's progress. According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the need for an independent third-party validation to ensure transparency throughout the project's implementation. He also stated that the Centre would bear all associated expenses.
During the meeting, authorities briefed participants on the federal government’s broader solar energy initiatives in Gilgit-Baltistan. An 18MW solarisation project targeting government buildings across the region is currently underway. This includes projects in Gilgit and Diamer divisions, scheduled for completion by December, and in Baltistan division, expected to conclude by October.
Work is also in progress on an 82MW solar energy project designed for houses in the areas of Gilgit, Skardu, Chilas, and Khaplo.
The 100MW power project for Gilgit-Baltistan had been formally approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in December, with the aim of ensuring an uninterrupted, affordable, and sustainable power supply to the region. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council also approved the project in August 2025.
According to Dawn Pakistan, these initiatives underscore the government's commitment to enhancing energy infrastructure in Gilgit-Baltistan.
