PM Shehbaz Stresses National Security Importance Ahead of Budget Presentation
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underscored the critical role of strong national security during a federal cabinet meeting called to approve the government's third budget. He asserted that a nation's ability to manage its affairs and achieve progress is dependent on robust security. The Prime Minister acknowledged the public's patience through past economic difficulties, including tax impositions necessary for national and IMF requirements, and noted a decline in inflation from 38% to single digits, despite recent slight increases attributed to regional conflicts.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of a nation's strong security during a federal cabinet meeting on Friday. The meeting was convened to approve the government's third budget before its presentation to the parliament.
“I believe that no nation can handle its matters, let alone make progress, if its security is not strong,” the Prime Minister stated. He acknowledged the necessity of imposing taxes in the previous two budgets to meet national and International Monetary Fund (IMF) requirements, aimed at stabilizing the economy and fostering progress.
Prime Minister Sharif expressed gratitude to the 240 million people of Pakistan for their patience in enduring inflation, which he noted had declined from 38% to single digits over the past two years. He added that inflation recently increased slightly due to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
He also highlighted a reduction in the policy rate from 22.5% to 11% during the same period, though it subsequently increased due to the impacts of the US-Iran war. Earlier in his address, Prime Minister Sharif mentioned attending the funeral prayers for “martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty,” including two Christians, describing the experience as deeply moving.
According to Dawn Pakistan, these remarks were made as the government prepared to present its third budget.
