Portsmouth FC Prepares for Critical Summer Transfer Window
Portsmouth FC is preparing for a pivotal summer transfer window to strengthen its squad ahead of the upcoming Championship season. Head coach John Mousinho and sporting director Richard Hughes are tasked with identifying strategic additions and managing potential player departures. The club is actively working to secure new contracts for existing free agents while focusing on key areas for improvement, including a right winger, a central midfielder, and a starting striker.
Portsmouth FC is facing a critical summer transfer window as the club aims to bolster its squad for the Championship. Head coach John Mousinho, who has led Pompey since January 2023, and sporting director Richard Hughes previously oversaw a successful transfer period in 2023, which saw the construction of a squad that secured promotion from League One.
The club is working to retain key players, with new deals reportedly offered to Zak Swanson and Connor Ogilvie. Portsmouth is said to be confident that both players will remain with the club for the next season. With the potential for the squad to reach 25 senior players, the team may need to facilitate departures to create space for new signings over the age of 21.
Potential departures include Terry Devlin, who attracted interest from Wrexham in January, and Adrian Segecic, whose strong finish to the season may draw suitors. Other players like Ibane Bowat and Jordan Williams are seeking more regular playing time, while Luke Le Roux and Harvey Blair face uncertain futures. Makenzie Kirk is expected to require a loan move for further opportunities. A potential move for Devlin could also boost Portsmouth's transfer spending power.
In terms of additions, Portsmouth has clear priorities. The club aims to sign a right winger to address the long-standing need for a replacement for Matt Ritchie. A new midfielder who complements Ebou Adams is also sought. Furthermore, the club is looking for a starting striker to be ready for the opening day, particularly if Colby Bishop does not regain his previous form.
Sporting director Hughes has indicated that a return for last season's loanee Conor Chaplin is unlikely. The futures of loan wingers Millenic Alli and Gustavo Cabellero are also expected to lie away from Fratton Park. Free agents Jed Wallace and Adam Webster are considered improbable signings, as is a return for former loanee Abu Kamara.
Despite speculation, head coach John Mousinho, who is highly-rated, is expected to remain with Portsmouth FC.
