Radiocarbon Dating Confirms Millennia of Human Occupation in Pyrenees National Park
Researchers from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) have developed an open database comprising 124 carbon-14 dated samples. This resource enabled the creation of a chronological sequence for 380 archaeological sites within the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. The comprehensive analysis confirms continuous human occupation for several thousand years in high-altitude areas of the Pyrenees, including sites located over 2,000 meters (6,562 feet).

A team of researchers from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) has established a new open database, which integrates 124 carbon-14 dated samples. This initiative has been instrumental in charting the chronological history of numerous archaeological locations.
The database allowed for the construction of a precise chronological sequence for 380 distinct sites situated within the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park.
The evidence gathered from these samples corroborates a history of continuous human presence spanning several thousand years. This occupation includes sites found at elevations exceeding 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) within the Pyrenees mountain range.
According to Phys.org, the findings provide significant insights into the long-term human adaptation and settlement in these high-altitude environments.
