Ralf Rangnick Extends Austria Contract, Declines AC Milan Role
Ralf Rangnick has extended his contract as the head coach of the Austria national team, committing until at least the end of 2027. This decision follows his rejection of an offer to become AC Milan's new technical director. Rangnick cited a lack of "clarity" from the Italian club as the reason for turning down the opportunity, prioritizing his current role and staff continuity with the Austrian Football Federation.
Ralf Rangnick has extended his contract with the Austria national team, with the agreement now set to run until the end of 2027. The contract also includes a potential extension to 2028 if Austria qualifies for the next European Championship.
Rangnick had been contacted by AC Milan approximately three weeks prior regarding a potential move to become the Rossoneri’s new technical director. However, his extended commitment to the Austria national team means he will not be joining the Italian club.
Explaining his decision, Rangnick told Krone.at that he sought "clarity by the beginning of the World Cup" for himself, his team, the country, the ÖFB, and his players. He stated that he saw "no clarity" from AC Milan, which influenced his choice to remain in charge of the Austria national team.
Rangnick also emphasized that his discussions with the ÖFB were positive and trusting. He highlighted the importance of his staff remaining onboard, noting that he only recently confirmed that arrangements for his staff were settled, which solidified his decision.
AC Milan is reportedly still seeking to fill several leadership positions, including a new CEO, technical director, sporting director, and coach. This follows the reported departures of Massimiliano Allegri, Giorgio Furlani, Geoffrey Moncada, and Igli Tare at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. Ruben Amorim is reportedly a leading candidate for the coaching role, with a two-year deal offered.
